Australias Top Athletes Train in Darwin

During May Darwin played host to 2 high performance swim teams as they began their preparations for the Australian Swimming Trails, to secure a spot on the Australian Olympic Team.

The teams included St Peters Western (SPW) high performance squad and the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) high performance squad.

Some athletes who were apart of the SPW squad included, Ariana Titmus, Mitch Larkin, Jack Cartwright, and local Darwin’s boy Josh Staples who recently qualified for the 2021 Australian World Junior Team. There was a total of 22 Olympic hopefuls within the squad. There team is coached by Dean Boxell and Maxine Saaera.

Athletes within the SASI squad include Kyle Chalmers, Maddi Wilson, and Travis Mahoney along with another 7 swimmers. They trained at the Parap Pool for a week and a half.

All teams enjoyed a morning tea organised by Swimming Northern Territory with the City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis on Friday 21st May 2021, to show our appreciation for there visits.

Lord Mayor Kon Vastkalis said: ‘It is great to see the interstate swimmers training in Darwin and taking advantage of the fantastic Parap Pool facilities.  Its not every day we are able to get up close and personal with these talented swimmers’.

Rohan Taylor, Swimming Australia Head Coach stated that Darwin will be the warm weather training destination for all future international teams up until (& including) the 2024 Paris Olympic Team.
